What Affects the Cost of a Pool Liner Replacement?

Two liner replacements on the same street can come in at very different prices, and it’s rarely about the pattern. The size and shape of the pool, the liner’s thickness, the upgrades you choose and the condition of the pool all add up. Here’s what drives the price, so you can read a quote with confidence and get a ballpark number from our estimator.
Factor 1
Size and shape
The biggest factor is how much vinyl your pool needs. A larger pool needs a larger liner and more time to install.
- Round pools are the simplest and usually cost the least for their size.
- Oval pools take more vinyl for the same swim area and more work to fit the straight sides.
- Wall height matters too: a 54″ wall takes more vinyl than a 48″ or 52″ wall.

Factor 2
The liner itself
- Thickness. Standard 20 mil is included in our estimates. Heavy-duty 25 mil adds about 10% and holds up better to pets and heavy use.
- Attachment style. Overlap, beaded, J-Hook or Uni-Bead depends on your pool. See 6 Pool Liner Attachments.
- Pattern. Some patterns come only in certain thicknesses or attachment styles. See How to Choose a Pool Liner Pattern.
Factor 3
Upgrades under the liner
These are optional, but they change how the pool feels and how long the liner lasts:
| Upgrade | What it does | Added to estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4″ wall foam | Cushions the liner against the wall, adds a bit of insulation | About 20% |
| Floor pad | A softer floor that protects the liner from rocks and roots | About 15% |
| Foam cove | A clean, consistent curve where the wall meets the floor | About 10% |

Factor 4
Your pool and yard
- The base. Holes, ruts and washed-out spots in the floor need to be repaired before the new liner goes in.
- A deck. A deck that overhangs the pool or blocks the top rails makes the job harder.
- The skimmer and return. We never reuse cracked faceplates, and a new skimmer and return is a common add-on.
- The wall and frame. If the wall is rusting through, the money is better spent on a new pool. See Pool Wall Rusting? What to Do Before It Fails.
Factor 5
Reading a quote
When you compare quotes, make sure they include the same things:
- Draining the pool and removing the old liner
- Base and cove repair
- Liner thickness and attachment type
- New faceplates and gaskets
- Any upgrades, like wall foam or a floor pad
- Refilling, or who pays for the water. See Should We Fill Our Pool With a Water Truck?
A low quote that skips base repair or reuses old faceplates often costs more later. See How to Choose an Above Ground Pool Installer.
Factor 6
Ways to save
- Book early. Our Book Before Opening offer includes a free skimmer and return when you book by March 31. See Why Winter Is the Best Time to Book a Liner Replacement.
- Skip the opening chemicals. If the liner is being replaced in spring, the old water gets drained anyway. See Replacing Your Liner Next Spring?
- Protect the liner you buy. Balanced water and a good winter cover help it last its full 8 to 15 years. See How Long Do Above Ground Pool Liners Last?
- Spread it out. Financing is available.
A $120 value, and your pool gets on the schedule before the opening-season rush.
