7 Signs Your Above Ground Pool Liner Needs Replacing

A vinyl liner usually lasts 8 to 15 years. It rarely fails all at once. It gives warnings first, and catching them early is the difference between a planned replacement in spring and an emergency with half your pool in the yard. Here are the seven signs we look for on every backyard visit.

Sign 1
Faded, chalky color

Sun and chlorine slowly bleach the print, starting at the waterline where UV hits hardest. A little fading is cosmetic. But if the pattern is washed out and the vinyl feels chalky when you rub it, the vinyl is aging and losing flexibility. Fading is usually the first sign that the rest of this list is coming. Sign 2
Stiff, brittle vinyl

A healthy liner is soft and stretchy. An old one gets stiff, especially above the waterline, and can crack when you press on it or when the water level drops. Brittle vinyl is the big one: it can’t stretch back into place after a winter, and it can split when you try to patch it.

Careful at opening time

A brittle liner often makes it through the summer, then cracks when the cover comes off or the water is topped up in spring. If yours is stiff now, plan the replacement before opening day.

Sign 3
Wrinkles that won’t go away

Small wrinkles at install time usually relax out. Wrinkles that show up later, or keep getting worse, mean the liner has stretched or shifted, often from a water level that dropped too low or ground that moved underneath. Wrinkles trap dirt, are hard to brush, and wear through faster at the folds. See Why Is My Pool Liner Wrinkled?

Sign 4
Pulling away from the track

On a beaded, J-Hook or Uni-Bead liner, look along the top. If the bead is popping out of the track, or the liner is stretched tight and pulling down from the top rail, it has lost its shape. On an overlap liner, watch for the coping strips slipping. A liner that pulls out of its track can drop into the pool while it’s full of water. Sign 5
Leaks and patches piling up

One small hole is a patch job. Use leak-finding dye to find it and an underwater vinyl patch kit to fix it. But when you’re on your third or fourth patch, the water level keeps dropping, or the leak is along a seam or the floor-to-wall corner, patching just buys time. See Reasons Why Your Pool Is Losing Water.

Sign 6
Stains that won’t come out

Leaves left in over the winter, metals in the water and old algae can leave stains that no brush or treatment removes. Stains don’t always mean the liner is failing, but on an older liner they’re often what tips owners toward replacing it.

Sign 7
It’s past 10 years old

Age alone isn’t a reason to replace a liner that still looks and feels good. But once a liner passes about 10 years, the signs above tend to show up, and the risk of a sudden failure goes up every winter. More: How Long Do Above Ground Pool Liners Last?

While the liner is out

A replacement is the time to fix what’s underneath: re-level the base, smooth the cove, and put in new skimmer and return gaskets. That’s what makes the new liner last. See 5 Steps to a Perfect Pool Liner Replacement.
